The US data privacy legal environment is not—at this point—an easy one to navigate. Unlike in the EU, there is no federal-level equivalent to the groundbreaking General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): a singe law guaranteeing the privacy of consumer data held by companies. Instead there are several US data laws that apply to different verticals—primarily the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) for banking, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for health data.
